New DUoS rates have recently been published by most Distribution Network Operators (DNOs). The rates for the DUoS benefits and cost should be published by the DNOs by the 31st of December around 1.5 years before the start of the compliance period they are valid (1st of April - 31st of March), but some DNOs have been granted an extension.
Generators of renewable energy connected to the distribution network receive embedded benefits, consisting of transmission losses, distribution losses, Transmission Network Use of System Charges (TNUoS) and DUoS. This is because they can reduce network costs as they are often closer to end-users.
DUoS rates depend on which DNO an asset is in and the connection voltage. Low voltage (LV) sites receive the same rates and high voltage (HV) sites receive the same rates, but for extra high voltage (EHV) sites the rates depend on the specific site.
For generators on a PPA, the embedded benefits can be a significant source of revenue. For LV and HV sites, DUoS benefits are given based on production during the red, amber and green time bands and therefore assets with specific generation profiles would receive more benefits. The exact timings for the red, amber and green bands are decided by the DNOs. For example, North West England (region 16) [1], operates with the following time bands:

The DUoS benefit rates have increased from 2026/2027 to 2027/2028 for both LV and HV sites, meaning generators in this region can expect higher DUoS benefit payments.

EHV sites receive payments based on the super red time band, rather than the red/amber/green time bands. The rates are site-specific.
In addition to DUoS benefits, DUoS costs are paid per MPAN per day. For example, Northern Scotland (region 17) has reduced the fixed charge from 1073p/day to 821p/day, which is a positive change for generators.
Embedded benefits depend on region, generation profile and connection voltage. Renewable Exchange’s daily site-specific forecast includes all the embedded benefits and provides accurate PPA rate estimates, specific to their renewable asset(s). It’s updated daily, and free to access.
