We've now facilitated the signing of 1,500 Power Purchase Agreements using our standard form Lightning PPA, introduced in November 2021. Set against our wider history of over 3,000 PPAs since 2018, it's a milestone that tells a clear story about what happens when you remove friction from a complex market.
Renewable Exchange has been facilitating PPAs since March 2018. Over those early years, we built deep expertise in how PPAs are structured, negotiated, and executed, and we saw first-hand where the process created unnecessary delay for both generators and offtakers.
In November 2021, we launched our standard form Lightning PPA. The premise was straightforward: take that accumulated market knowledge and build a contract structure that was rigorous enough to stand up commercially, but efficient enough to close at pace. Three years and 1,500 signed agreements later, that approach has been validated by the market.
The traditional PPA process was slow not because the underlying deal was inherently complex, but because every transaction started from scratch. Bespoke legal drafting, multiple rounds of negotiation, and manual signatures all added weeks or months to a process that, commercially, needed to move much faster.
The Lightning PPA addressed each of those friction points directly. By standardising contract terms between generators and offtakers, we removed the need for repeated legal review. By making the process fully digital, we eliminated manual administration. And by enabling one-click execution, we gave generators the ability to lock in a price at the moment it makes commercial sense, rather than days or weeks later.
Recent volatility in the energy market has made the case for execution speed more compelling than ever. PPA prices can move significantly within a single day. A process that takes weeks to complete is not just inefficient; it actively exposes generators to pricing risk that a faster process would eliminate entirely.
This month, over 95% of all PPAs signed through Renewable Exchange were Lightning PPAs. That adoption rate reflects how the market is responding to that reality. When the tools are there to act quickly, participants use them.
As we approach our 10th year in business this August, this milestone reaffirms the direction we set out in. The market for renewable energy is growing, the urgency around decarbonisation is intensifying, and the need for efficient, transparent procurement tools has never been greater.
1,500 Lightning PPAs is a number we're proud of. But it's also a foundation, not a finish line.
